Sizziling South America
ARGENTINA: A distinct advantage that this fascinating country enjoys for vineyard production is mild, dry, weather, fertile soil and abundant sun. Situated at the foot of the Andes, the Argentina wine region is a lush agricultural oasis. Although dry, due to elevation, it is not particularly hot and the cool evenings allow production of intensely flavored fruit. While with us here at the Serengeti, try the signature red wine of this country known as Malbec. Grown in the high altitude region of Mendoza, Argentina touts this wine as smoother than their Cabernets, slightly fruiter and best of all, they can be assumed when relatively young. Malbec has become the flagship of Argentinas domestic wine industry. Other excellent wine varietals include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese.
CHILE: Although Chile has been making wine for over 400 years, it has been only in the last 20 years or so, that the world has begun to take notice. But what notice it has been! In a recent international wine expo, Chilean wine as a group ranked second only to France, the host country. Chile’s natural conditions give it every advantage in producing quality wines. Blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate and long summers, the grapes explode with flavors, aromas and intense colors from lengthy ripening seasons. Particularly good white wines from the region include Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays, and Reislings. Widely acclaimed reds to be savred are Cabernets, Merlots and the difficult to grow, yet sensational Pinot Noir. Chilean wines stress sweet fruit and ripe tannins and are widely known for their young drinkability and value.
Land Down Under
AUSTRALIA: From the land down under, Australias grapes are among its greatest assets. After all, who could imagine a fine wine selection without their classic Shiraz. Blessed with abundant sunshine, Australia produces rich, full flavored reds. The world’s premiun red grape varieties are found in Australia. In addition to its famous Shiraz, there are exceptional cabs and merlots to be enjoyed. And most certainly don’t over look their whites. Don’t assume that if you’ve tasted Australian Chardonnay, a true treat in itself, that you have the diversity and quality of what Australian whites offer. Crisp Reislings and Sauvignon Blancs are delicious with ripe fruits as their primary distinguishing characteristics.
NEW ZEALAND: Small wineries and big pleasures, New Zealand is a land like no other and New Zealand’s wine experience is also like no other. With an international acclaim for its Sauvignon Blanc, rated as a true benchmark for this varietal, New Zealand is also enjoying growing recognition for its Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet/Merlot blends. Grown in predominantly coastal vineyards, the long, slow ripening period helps to retain the vibrant flavors that make New Zealand wines distinctive. From the bright and zesty Sauvignon Blanc to the complex Chardonnay, every glass is a delightful discovery.
